Our Philosophy

Generally, persons experiencing homelessness have experienced a life informed by, among various factors, intergenerational & historical trauma, cultural conflict & acculturation, institutional & structural oppression, criminalization of post-traumatic stress, poverty, gross neglect, and incarceration. The nature of this social exclusion manifests in complex re-traumatization, toxic stress and disease, mental illness, and short-term or chronic homelessness.

In the absence of both Mindfulness and Trauma-Informed practices, person-on-person mistreatment is largely reanimated within institutionalized settings (i.e. hospitals, rehabilitation centers, criminal justice institutions, schools, social service organizations, etc.), whereby intentional or unintentional mistreatment is inflicted by persons rendering service onto those receiving service. This tends to increase trauma complexity, and further separate the self from recognition, healing, renegotiation, and transformation of trauma.

Key elements engendering health and wellness disparities presenting in chronically homeless populations are globally known as Social Determinants of Health (SDH). The use of a Holistic Pathology Model allows for examination of presenting symptoms and root causes of both biological and social pathologies. This Holistic Pathology Model is applicable across the spectrum of both individual and societal-based conditions.
